Chapter 13: The Servants' Hall
I left the king standing at his cold hearth and did not go back to the royal apartments.
Those rooms held eight years of me folded neatly into drawers.
I did not want to sleep among my own good manners.
The laundry master's rooms were down three flights, past the wash-house, where the boilers still ticked as they cooled.
He opened his door in his shirtsleeves with a candle in his fist.
He was a huge man who had never once said more than six words to me in a row.
"Majesty," he said.
"I need somewhere to sleep that isn't mine."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he turned and shouted over his shoulder, "Mind the stove, the Queen's coming in!"
I had not known a laundry could go silent so fast.
His wife came out of the back room, thin and straight, with a shawl around her shoulders.
She had been in bed the whole autumn.
Now she took my hands in both of hers and said, "You sent the broth."
