Chapter 16: The Abbess's Price
The Abbess did not speak to me in the garden.
She waited until the old queens had been carried into the palace and settled by the kitchen fire with their feet on warm bricks.
Then she asked for a room with a door, and I gave her the laundry master's drying loft.
It was the only place in Hallowfen where nobody would think to listen.
She sat on an upturned basket with the ledger on her knees and looked at the sheets overhead.
They hung from the rafters in long white rows, still damp, and she was very small beneath them.
Daveth stood by the loft window with his arms crossed.
I stood at the table.
"I have kept that tower for forty years," said the Abbess.
"I did not make the law of it. I inherited a key and a ledger and the habit of not looking up the stairs."
"You looked at me," I said. "In my solar. You told me no Lorrimer had answered."
