Chapter 23: Unwritten
The Abbess did not want to do it.
I saw that in her face as she stood before Daveth in the moonlight from the east window.
She held the ledger open on her two palms.
"Daveth Marrowen, Keeper of the Quiet Book."
"Yes, Mother."
"You spoke a queen's name to her in breach of the Silence. The penalty is to be unwritten."
"I know it."
"Is there one here who vouches for the Keeper?"
A thousand people held their breath.
She asked a second time, and a third, which was the custom.
Nobody answered, because nobody knew how.
"There is no form," the Abbess said, almost to herself. "There has never been a form."
She raised her pen.
"Wait," I said.
I went to the council table and picked up the charcoal the herald used for his corrections.
I pushed my sleeve to the elbow and wrote on the inside of my arm in large, uneven letters.
DAVETH MARROWEN.
I held up my wrist for the hall.
"For eight years nobody could hold my name," I said.
