Chapter 24: The Market at Hallowfen
I went down to the river market on a plain morning in a plain brown dress.
There was no crown in my hair and no guard behind me.
There was a basket on my arm, because Catrin had insisted a person walking to market should look as if she meant to buy something.
Daveth walked beside me with his hand in mine, his travelling coat on his back and ink on his finger.
The stalls ran along the quay in crooked rows, all striped awnings and shouting.
Fish lay on ice, bread steamed under cloths, and a boy sold ribbons from a tray tied round his neck.
For eight years I had crossed this market twice a year in a closed carriage with the blinds half down.
I had waved at people who had waved at the Queen.
I had never smelled it.
It smelled of river water, hot dough and crushed mint.
"Isaveth!" called the baker from behind her loaves.
