Chapter 15: That Could Be Anyone
I stood up.
It took the crutch and Dane's arm and most of my breath, but I stood.
Two hundred donors watched me do it.
"It's not anyone," I said. My voice carried. Brody had left the microphone on. "It's me. That's my voice, and that's Heidi's."
"This is a cruel joke," Mrs. Brackett said, from beside the sound board. "Security."
Nobody moved.
I started up the aisle between the tables, one slow step at a time, with Nolan behind me and Dane at my shoulder.
"On Tuesday night at eleven thirty-six, a white SUV ran the red light at Fourth and Dunmore and hit my car."
I looked at the head table.
"The driver got out. She looked at me. Then she got back in and left me there for an hour."
A man at table six said something under his breath.
"The plate begins with 7K. The SUV is registered to this family. It has a new left headlight and a fresh plate bracket, and a long blond hair was still caught in the driver's door handle."
Heidi laughed, softly, and the trophy shook in her hands.
"Derrick's car," she said. "Anyone in the house could have taken it."
"The keys hang on a hook by the kitchen door. Only two people live in that house."
"Derrick was home!"
"I know. Derrick was home all night with my brother and Brody. You were the one who drove."
She looked at Derrick.
He didn't look at her.
"The next morning your wrist was in a black brace," I said. "In the picture you posted, the one with the cake. You told me you fell down the stairs."
