Chapter 6: Plate Starts With 7K

On Monday evening, Dr. Kerrigan knocked on my door with a pharmacy bag in one hand and a tablet in the other.

"You don't make house calls," I said.

"I don't. This is a delivery." He held up the bag. "Crutch pads, because yours are the wrong size. And the detective sent me the longer clip, since I'm the witness who has to confirm the times."

"That's not a surgeon's job either."

"No."

"Then why are you here?"

He looked at the cast, then at the crutches against the wall, which I hadn't been able to reach.

"I wanted to see if anyone had brought you food."

"My brother did."

"Good."

He crouched in front of the crutches and swapped the pads himself, quick and careful, while I tried not to stare at the scar through his eyebrow.

He smelled like hospital soap and rain.

"Where do you want to watch it?" he said.

We watched it on my kitchen table.

The clip was gray and silent. Rain slanted through the gas station lights.

At 11:36 the white SUV came through the intersection without slowing.

My car went spinning off the shoulder.

I made myself keep watching.

The SUV stopped in the middle of the road with one headlight flaring on its left side.

The driver's door opened.

A small figure stepped out into the rain and stood very still, looking at my wreck.
