Chapter 14: The Law
Mummu sat at the plank table in her black church coat and did not take it off.
She laid her gauzed hand on the wood and looked at the lamp in the window for a long time.
Petroc stood by the stove with his shirt buttoned wrong.
I sat down across from my grandmother with my braid still loose, and neither of us mentioned why.
"Sit, Cap'n," Mummu said.
He sat.
"My mother was the midwife at Toivola," she said. "She delivered you, boy, in the front bedroom of this house, because your mother wanted a Finn's hands and not a Cornish doctor's."
Petroc said nothing.
"The night you were born, your mother told her a thing, because she was in pain and she was proud. My mother told it to me when I was forty, over the sauna stove, and I didn't believe a word."
"What thing?" I said.
"The law of the lamp."
Mummu turned her good hand over on the table.
"The Dry thinks it's a ceremony, a wife carrying a light across a floor. It's not. While that flame burns, the Cap'n's wolf can't act against a plain word from his wife."
