Petroc's POV

The cot in the back room of the Dry was narrow and smelled of mothballs and old wool.

I lay on it with my boots off and my pillow under my head and could not sleep.

The stoves ticked in the hall beyond the wall.

I could still feel her finger on my throat.

She had touched the red line the belt left, one fingertip, and my whole body had come up to meet it.

I had told her it was cold in the kitchen.

It was not cold, and she knew it, and she had let me say it.

I put my hand over my eyes.

I had been run by my wolf for nine years and by my temper for twenty.

Now there was a law in my own blood that a woman could pick up and use.

The only thing I had ever been sure of was gone.

I lay there and asked myself the question I had been asking since the Dry.

Which of my yeses were mine?

My hand went down my stomach on its own.

I was hard, and I had been hard for hours, thinking of her.

I closed my fist around myself and thought of her above me with the strap in her hand.
