Chapter 23: Her Father's Chair

We reached Ironcrest at dusk, and I made them leave us at the door.

The hall had no roof.

Three winters of snow had come through the rafters, and the stone floor was black in the places where the fire had been worst.

But someone had swept it.

The Ironcrest pack had come ahead of us with brooms and buckets and scrubbed the floor of the dais clean, and my father's chair stood at the top of it with a fresh candle on each arm.

The Stonegate Alpha's boot prints were gone from the seat.

Caspian stood in the doorway and did not come in.

"Rule one," he said.

"I'm not saying it yet."

"Then I'll wait."

I walked up the hall alone, past the place I had stood in a white veil, and touched the arm of the chair.

The wood was warm from the candles.

My shoulder throbbed under Autumn's neat bandage.

I turned around and sat down in it.

"Come here," I said.

He came up the length of the hall slowly.

He looked at me in my father's chair with the candlelight on my face, and I watched his throat move.

"You're the Alpha of Ironcrest," he said.

"For three nights."

"Sorcha..."

"Don't talk about the new moon." I held out my hand. "Not here. Come here, Caspian."

He stopped in front of me.

I took his scarred hand and laid it against my cheek.

"I'm saying so," I said. "All night."

He went down on his knees between mine.
