I Woke Up at the Altar and Said No to the Mob Heir Who Let Me Die, but He Remembers Too novel · Chapter 10 of 40

Chapter 10: The Machine

I didn't answer him.

I walked across the room, took Nessa's hand off the folding chair and said, "Time to go home, sweetheart."

"Already?"

"Already."

The two old ladies smiled at us. Senan smiled at us. Everybody smiled.

Outside, it had started to rain, warm summer rain that steamed off the sidewalk.

I was halfway to the corner when Cormac caught up. He held his coat over Nessa's head without asking.

"Tell me," he said.

I waited until Nessa was buckled into the back of his car, out of the wet, with the door shut.

Then I told him. All of it. The restroom. The toolbox. The nuns.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he put both hands on the roof of the car and looked down at them.

"He knows there's something," he said. "He doesn't know what or where."

"He knows it's mine."

"He suspects it's yours."

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"

"No." He straightened up. "I'll handle him."

"How?"

"Orla..."

"No. How." The rain was running into my collar. "You handled things last time. You handled me right into a box. So this time you tell me how. Every time. Everything you do about him, I hear about it from you, before I hear it from anybody else."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"That's the rule?"

"That's the second rule."

"All right," he said. "Here's how. Tonight I put a man on Senan. Not on you. On him. Where he goes, who he calls. I go through my father's books, because Senan's been skimming from the yard for ten years and my father let him. When I've got something that'll stand up in front of the family, I'll show you first."
