"You're bleeding oil on your face," I said.
The boots went still.
Then the creeper rolled out from under the truck, slowly, and he was looking up at me from the floor.
He had a smear of black across one cheekbone and a wrench in his fist.
He didn't get up.
I think he was afraid to.
"Orla."
"Una says you look terrible. She's right."
"Is Nessa..."
"Nessa's making a gingerbread house with Una and a bottle of whiskey. Una has the whiskey. Not Nessa."
He let out a breath and sat up on the creeper.
The radio on the workbench was playing a carol about a silent night.
The heater in the corner glowed orange. Snow blew in past me through the open bay.
"Can I shut that?" he said. "You're letting the cold in."
"I'll shut it."
I pulled the bay door down behind me with a bang.
The garage was suddenly small and warm and smelled of oil and coffee.
He stood up and wiped his hands on a rag, over and over, long after they were clean.
"Why are you here?"
"I came to ask you something," I said. "And you can say no."
He went still again.
He knew whose words they were.
"Ask," he said.
I'd practiced it the whole drive down. I'd said it to the windshield.
None of the practice was any good now.
"Come to Portsmouth," I said.
He didn't move.
"Not to marry me. Not to live with me. Get a room. Get a job. Come to my town, where I've got a shop and a kid and a bell on the door. And try."
