Chapter 8: Over My Dead Body
"Sit down, Mother," Cormac said.
"I will not sit down."
Philomena walked around the long table toward me, one hand trailing along the backs of the chairs.
The aunts leaned away as she passed.
"Do you all see it now?" she said to the room. "Do you? She turns my son down in front of the whole city. A week later she's at my table, taking my granddaughter."
"I'm not taking anyone," I said.
"Her trust fund is two million dollars." Philomena's voice rose. "Did he tell you that? Did you know that before you said no in church? Is that why you said no?"
A cousin made a low whistle.
I hadn't known.
I didn't look at Cormac. I kept my eyes on her.
"You can keep the money," I said. "Every dollar. I'll sign that too."
"Oh, will you." She laughed. "Rat's daughter. Your father sold us for less."
Down the table, Senan cleared his throat and raised his wine glass.
"Now, now, Phil. Kilbride was a fine driver." He smiled around at everybody. "Best wheelman in Southie. Pity about the brakes."
Two uncles laughed.
The laugh went around the table.
Nessa looked from face to face, not understanding, and laughed too because everybody else was.
My hands were flat on the tablecloth. I didn't let them shake.
"Senan," the old man said.
It was barely a word. It came out on a breath with the oxygen.
But Senan put his glass down.
The old man lifted one big shaking hand and pointed at the papers.
Cormac pulled the cap off a pen.
