Chapter 12: What the Glue Was

That night Dot took Milo to her house for a sleepover, and Gus drove me to the lake.

He parked at the end of the public dock, where the Founders' Day banners were already strung between the lampposts, and turned off the engine.

"Tell me," I said. "All of it. Not the part you think I can take."

He looked at the water for a long time.

"You were first at the fair," he said. "Everyone knew it. Your dam was the best thing in the building."

"I know."

"Mine was a wind turbine. It was fine. It spun."

"I never looked at it."

"I know," Gus said, without any bitterness. "The scholarship was a full ride to the state engineering school, and only one kid in the county got it. It was between you, Selena and me."

I held very still.

"You found the pieces on Saturday morning, and you knew where the glue came from."

"I remember the jar."

"Then you climbed on a chair in the middle of the gym, in front of four hundred people and three judges. You pointed at me."

"I did."

"You said, 'He did it, because he knew he couldn't win.'"

My face went hot. I could hear myself saying it, in a voice I did not like.

"You looked right at me," Gus said, "and I told you I didn't touch it."

"You did. I remember. I thought you lied."

"I know you did."

"Why didn't you say more?"

"Because you were crying," he said. "And because nobody asked me anything. They took the glue label as the answer."
