Chapter 23: First Snow Again

Wynne's POV

I woke up in Lorne's bed with the sun on the quilt and every muscle in my body aching.

He was already awake, propped on one elbow, watching me.

"Good morning," he said. "What do you want?"

"Coffee."

"Yes, ma'am."

"And you promised twice."

He grinned, slow and wicked, and I did not get coffee for a while.

We came down the stairs at ten, in his shirt and my jeans.

We found the sergeant in the kitchen, very busy with a pan.

He did not say a word about the noise.

He only slid a plate of eggs toward me and said, "A car is at the gate, sir. It's the General."

Lorne put down his cup.

His whole body went still, and he looked, for a moment, like the man who had thrown a mug at me on my first morning.

"I'll talk to him," I said.

"No."

"Lorne."

"I'll talk to him." He stood. "You can sit in. If you want."

I wanted.

General Strickland stood in the front hall in a plain overcoat, with no ribbons and no staff.

He was holding his cap in both hands, and for a moment I almost did not know him.

"Sir," Lorne said.

"I came to say something, and I would like to say it standing."

"All right."

The General looked at his son's leg, and at the stairs behind him.

I saw him understand that Lorne had come down them without a hand on the rail.

"The Army has opened an inquiry into my call to your board," he said. "I expect to be retired by spring. I have not come to ask you to stop it."
