Chapter 4: Say One Bad Thing

The magazine had hired a hotel suite with one sofa, one coffee table, and a bowl of pears nobody was allowed to eat.

Kit and Dorian sat at opposite ends of the sofa with the length of a cushion between them.

The journalist sat opposite, with a recorder balanced on a pear.

She was young and tired, and Rupert had told her to expect a feud.

She was clearly hoping for blood.

"I'll keep it simple," she said.

"One bad thing about each other. Dorian, you first."

Dorian turned on the sofa to face Kit with an expression of pure, courteous pleasure.

"He's too accurate," he said.

The journalist waited.

"Is that all?"

"It's devastating," said Dorian.

"Please write down that it's devastating."

She wrote it down, with a small frown.

Kit had prepared for this.

"He thanks people in the middle of a sentence," he said.

"You can be accusing someone of fraud, and he'll stop to say how helpful it is."

"That's a bad thing?" said the journalist.

"In a scene where he's meant to be furious, it is."

"I did that on Tuesday," Dorian told her, delighted.

"He said I was interrupting my own fury."

"You were," said Kit.

The journalist looked at the recorder, then at the pear.

"Round two," she said.

"Something that really gets under your skin."

Dorian opened his mouth.

Kit got there first, because the treaty banned only a handful of topics and none of them were Dorian's habits.
