Chapter 10: @slowpan

"You're @slowpan," I said.

Isla didn't turn around.

She stood by the big projector with her hands flat on its iron side, looking at the blank wall.

"I'm not going to lie to you in my own booth," she said. "Yes."

"Three years."

"Three years and one month. I commented on episode one the night it went up. It had four hundred views."

"Were you the first comment on that, too?"

"I was the only one."

I looked at the laptop screen.

I had read that name under every video I ever posted.

I had skimmed it in the closet, on the train, at two in the morning over cold coffee.

I had never once thought it was a person.

"Slowpan," I said.

"It's what you do." She turned at last. "A slow pan, left to right, tilt up at the end. Every opening shot. It's why I started."

"I do it because the room is better than the people."

"I know." Her voice stayed even, but her hands were tight on the iron. "That's why I wrote to you."

"Wrote to me."

"The letter. The first one."

"I kept it," I said.

She stopped.

"You what?"

"It's in my saved mail. It's how I picked Edinburgh."

"You kept it for three years."

"I never answered it."

"I know you didn't," Isla said, and for the first time I heard the edge in her voice. "I wrote you four times, Jasper."

"Four."

"The first month. Then at Christmas, then in the spring, then once after episode ninety."

"I told you the light was extraordinary. I asked if I could show your work on my screen."

"Four letters, not one answer."
