Chapter 22: The Rooftop After

Nobody on the roof moved for a long moment.

Then the crew began to turn their heads, one by one, and look toward the stairwell wall.

Toward me.

I stepped away from it, into the light.

Wyatt saw me.

He was still standing by the prompter with the grip's hand against his chest, and his face went through three things, and settled on the one I knew from freshman year.

It was the face he'd had the night I told him I was moving out of the dorm.

"There he is," Wyatt said.

He walked across the roof.

The crowd made a lane for him.

The grip let him go, and then came two steps behind, not close, but near.

"Jas," Wyatt said, when he reached me. "Four million people just heard me say that."

"I know."

"I never wrote a word of it. That's what I said. Into the lens."

"It's true."

"It's true." He laughed, hard and ugly. "You made me say it. You knew I would. You knew I'd read it because I always read what's there."

"I knew you'd say whatever was in front of you."

"You put a knife in my mouth."

"I put a fact in it."

"I thought you were my friend."

"I was," I said. "I wrote you a room, a job, a girl everyone loved. You said every word of it. You never asked me why I wasn't in the pictures."

His jaw worked.

"You were behind the camera. Where else would you be?"

"That's the question."

"I didn't know it hurt you."

"You didn't ask."

He looked at me, and I saw him understand, slowly and unwillingly, that I wasn't angry.

I had been angry for three weeks, and the roof had burned it out.

"Do you know I can't remember a single thing I said on that channel?" Wyatt said.

His voice cracked on the last word.
