Chapter 22: Forty-Eight Hours
The squad boss threw his coffee mug at the TV.
It missed and broke on the wall, and nobody said a word about it.
"He's lying," the rookie said. "You're right here. He's lying on the news."
"He lies on the news very well," Jesse said.
The superintendent was already on his phone.
He walked to the window with his back to them and talked low for two minutes.
When he turned around his face had gone flat.
"That was the dispatcher at the Clallam County sheriff's office," he said. "She's worked with this crew for twenty years."
"And?"
"Nobody named Gideon Strake has been booked anywhere in the county. No warrant. No transfer."
The room went quiet.
"Taken into custody," Jesse said. "His custody."
"So we walk you into the sheriff's office tonight," the squad boss said. "Alive. Murder's over."
"And the next morning the north wing is empty," Jesse said.
"The men on those cots disappear. Gideon falls off something."
"You don't know that."
"I watched them build a dead man out of sandbags in one morning."
