Chapter 27: Names
Nobody moved.
Then somebody in the second rank of the formation made a noise.
"That's him," Ollie said, out loud, at attention, with egg on his shirt. "That's Seventeen. I carried his casket. Well. I cried at it."
"Nineteen," Sallow barked.
Ollie didn't even look at him.
Beside him, Twenty-Two broke ranks.
He walked out of the formation and stood next to Jesse on the asphalt.
He folded his arms.
Gorham recovered first.
He always did.
He put his hand over the microphone and smiled down at Jesse with real sorrow.
"Grief does strange things to people," he said into it. "Security. Please help this young man back to his seat."
Two guards started across the asphalt.
In the middle bleachers, the superintendent stood up.
"That's my firefighter," he said.
He didn't need a microphone either.
"Colonel, you owe my crew a funeral."
The squad boss stood up beside him.
He had something grey balled in his fist, and he shook it out and held it over his head.
