Chapter 28: Next of Kin

Gideon fell back against Jesse.

Jesse caught him under the arms, and they went down together on the wet asphalt.

Gideon's weight pinned his legs.

There was a hole in the black shirt just under Gideon's left collarbone, and it was already pumping.

"Gideon."

Gideon blinked up at the canopy.

"I'm all right," he said, which was a lie.

Jesse pressed both hands flat over the hole and leaned his whole weight on it.

Gideon groaned through his teeth.

Blood came up between Jesse's fingers, hot, and ran into the cuffs of his yellow shirt.

Somebody was screaming in the left bleachers.

Jesse looked up.

Sallow was ten feet away with the pistol still out.

His face was white around the tape.

He was looking at Jesse over Gideon's body, and the muzzle was coming back around.

"Luke," Jesse said.

His brother was already on his knees beside him.

"Here. Both hands. Lean."

Luke put his hands where Jesse's were and leaned.

Jesse came up off the asphalt.

Sallow fired again and the round went somewhere over Jesse's shoulder into the black eagle banner.

Then a grey shirt hit Sallow from the side at full speed.
