"Outside," I said.
I stood up so fast that my chair scraped the floor.
Jude's mother said, "Lucinda, sit down, let's discuss this like adults."
Danielle lifted her iced tea and drank, watching me over the rim.
I walked through the front hall and down the steps and stopped in the middle of the striped lawn.
Behind me the screen door banged.
Jude came down the walk with both hands open.
"Start with the truck," I said.
"I was parked outside Hollis Hall when Danielle called."
"Before you picked me up."
"Two minutes before."
He swallowed.
"She was sobbing, and she said her boyfriend's ex had walked in with a cake and humiliated her in front of the whole floor."
"Humiliated her," I said.
"That's what she said. I told her I'd call back."
