Chapter 23: New Rules

On Monday Danielle stood at the front of my chemistry lecture in a plain grey sweater, with no pearls and no lipstick.

The professor had given her the lectern and then stepped aside, with his arms crossed.

Two hundred people looked down at her from the rows.

I sat in the aisle seat of the third row with Jude beside me, and he did not take my hand until I took his.

Danielle's paper shook so hard I could hear it.

"My name is Danielle Ransom," she said.

"I'm the girl who was under the blanket in the cake video."

A murmur went through the rows, and she waited until it died.

"I printed the flyers about Lucinda Gisborne, and everything on them was a lie."

"She never traded anything for a grade."

"She got her grades by working, and she told the truth about Brock, and I punished her for it."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm sorry."

"That's all of it."

"I'm sorry, Lucinda."

Nobody clapped.

It was quiet, and it was the right kind of quiet.

I stood up in the aisle, so she could see me.

I nodded once.

She nodded back, and her whole face collapsed with relief, and she walked out of the hall with her head down.

"Thank you, Miss Ransom," the professor said, to the empty doorway.
