Chapter 4: Never Once Seen Them Kiss

On Wednesday morning Ray knocked on the door of my room and held up a set of truck keys.

"Kat's up to her elbows in a mare with colic," he said. "Somebody has to pick up the flowers, and the florist likes me. Come keep me company."

I did not want to leave the house.

I also did not want to spend the day in a room that Ryan could walk past.

So I put on my boots and went.

Ray drove with one wrist on the wheel, and he talked the entire way into Salida.

He told me which neighbor had the best peaches and which one had been feuding with the county over a fence line since 1998.

He did it so cheerfully that I laughed twice and then felt guilty about it.

"Kat says you're an accountant," he said.

"Forensic accountant. I find money people have hidden."

"Like on TV."

"Like TV, but with spreadsheets, and nobody has a gun."

He slapped the steering wheel and laughed.

"I love that. I could never read a trust document to save my life. Paper makes my eyes cross."

"You'd be surprised how much is in the paper," I said.

"I bet I would." He smiled at the road. "Funny that you're friends with Kat. She's the one in this family who can't stand numbers."
