Chapter 9: The Promise

Ryan's POV

I stood with my hands on the stall boards where her head had been, and I could still taste her.

Kat didn't say anything for a long time.

She came in and sat down on the hay bale I'd left, and she picked a piece of straw off her sleeve.

"You stopped," she said.

"I swore to you."

"You idiot."

"Kat."

"No, I mean it. You absolute idiot."

She was crying a little, and smiling too.

"Do you know how long I've waited to see you stop being polite?"

"I made you a promise."

"I made you a promise too, and I'm breaking it."

I turned around.

My heart was still going hard from the kiss, and the rest of me felt scraped raw.

"Say that again."

"I asked you to wait until Saturday because I was a coward." She wiped her face with the heel of her hand. "I thought if she knew everything before the wedding, she'd turn around and leave, and I'd lose both of you in the same week."

"She might still leave."

"She might. But I just watched her put her hands on you in a barn at eleven at night. Annie doesn't do that for a man she plans to forget."
