Chapter 8: Darkroom
"There's a second phone," I told Simone. "In my parents' piano bench."
I said it standing in her darkroom doorway, because that was where she had gone when she heard me come up the stairs.
It was a small room at the back of the studio with no window and a red bulb over the sink.
She was developing a print, and she did not turn around.
"You're sure?"
"Dustin wrote it on a repair tag and then made me burn it."
"Then there's no proof you were told."
"There's no proof I was told, and there's a phone in a bench."
"And you want to get it."
"Saturday. My parents go to a funeral lunch. Dustin has the key."
She lifted the print out of the tray with tongs and hung it on the line.
It was a picture of Dustin's face, frame forty-one, blown up to a full sheet.
She'd been making it all morning.
"Okay," she said. "I'll come."
"No."
"I'm coming, Dean. I'll bring the camera and photograph the bench before you touch it. If it goes to a court, I want it timestamped by someone who isn't a Mercer."
"That's a good reason."
"I have other reasons."
"Tell me one."
She turned around then.
The red light made her face a dark, plain shape, and her eyes were very steady.
"I took your money three times," she said. "I looked at that frame of your brother's mouth the same afternoon I shot it. I printed it. I put it in a drawer for a week and told myself it was none of my business. I'm good at this job because I notice things, and I'm very bad at doing anything about them."
