Chapter 31: Journeyman
"Then you'll do both," Ozias said. "Can you?"
"Test's at seven in the morning," I said. "When's the ceremony?"
"Moonrise."
"Then I can."
Judd looked at me across the table.
"You're going to wire the hall for it," he said. "Aren't you."
"Somebody has to. The lantern circuit's a disgrace."
My mother laughed into her coffee.
Ozias didn't laugh, but he passed me the bacon.
The day of the test, it sleeted.
Late May, and the sky came down gray over the co-op yard and spat ice sideways.
"Perfect," the foreman said. "Real weather. You'll learn something."
The examiner came from the state in a clean truck and a clean coat.
He had a clipboard and no expression at all.
The whole crew came.
They weren't supposed to.
It was a Saturday, and none of them were on the clock.
The old lineman sat on the tailgate of his truck with the giant thermos.
The young guy brought a lawn chair.
The dispatcher brought donuts and stood under the trailer awning in her reading glasses.
