Chapter 24: Properly
"Properly," I said. "What does properly mean?"
"A dress you picked," Roscoe said. "Not one pulled out of a closet the night before."
"And your name on the invitation."
"And no envelope."
"No envelope." He turned the ring again. "And this time I don't stand up there wondering if you'll walk."
I looked at the altar where I'd held up twenty-two thousand dollars and asked him if he'd bought me.
"In the spring," I said. "When the wheat's green. I want to see it out the windows."
He kissed me in the empty sanctuary until the pastor coughed in the doorway.
The wedding was the third Saturday in April.
At seven that morning I was in the front room of the yellow house on Elm Street, pulling pies out of my own oven.
I'd put the oven in myself in February, with Roscoe and two co-op men and a lot of swearing.
There was a glass counter where Mavis's sofa used to be.
In the window hung a sign Posy had painted in red letters taller than she was.
BETSY'S. PIE. SATURDAYS.
Twelve pies cooled on the rack for the reception.
Every one of them came off a card in my mother's handwriting.
My grandmother came in from the back bedroom, already dressed for church, and laid an envelope on my counter.
"Saturday," Mavis said.
"You could skip one. It's my wedding."
"I don't skip." She looked at the pies, and then at me. "Your crust's better than mine."
"I know, Grandma."
She almost laughed, the old smoker's laugh, and then she went to find her good pearls.
Kendra had sent a card from Wichita.
It said, I'm sorry, Bets, in my sister's round handwriting, and nothing else.
I put it on the shelf over the counter, next to the recipe box.
It was a start.
At two o'clock the Alder Creek Methodist church was full.
Every pew, and folding chairs in the back, and people standing along the walls in their good boots.
I wore a dress I'd bought myself in the county seat with pie money, pale blue, with sleeves.
