Chapter 13: Twelve Dollars

Sienna did not come down the stairs.

She stood where she was, with the phone held out in front of her.

"Please," she said. "Is it true?"

I had made one promise to myself on the subway that morning, and it was to say nothing until the dinner.

Maggie's ladle was still in her hand.

She looked at me, and I could tell she would hit anyone I pointed at.

"I can't tell you what's in a county file," I said.

It was the longest sentence I had said to Sienna in two weeks.

"That isn't an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

Her eyes were red at the rims, and her knot of blond hair had come half loose.

She looked like the woman who had pinned my hem in a hotel restroom and told me I was the only one there who worked.

"His lawyer says it's a clerical mix-up," she said. "He says someone is using it to scare me."

"Then you shouldn't be scared."

She flinched, and I did not feel good about it.

I did not feel bad about it either.

"Sienna," I said. "You can order the record yourself. Washoe County sells certified copies."

"How much?"

"Twelve dollars. Don't use your work phone, and don't use his card."

Maggie made a small noise in her throat that might have been a laugh.

Sienna's hand went to her stomach, the way it had at the party, and stayed there.

"You knew," she said. "You've known since the shower."
