Chapter 19: The Other Wife

Tim did not answer her.

Three hundred people watched him not answer, and then they watched him turn it into something else.

"Sienna is my assistant," he said, loud and fast, to the room. "She's been under terrible strain."

"I tried to protect her. I'm afraid she's become confused about our relationship."

Sienna's mouth opened.

"You introduced me," she said. "Five minutes ago. You said my name."

"I said what I thought would calm you down."

The sound that went through the ballroom was not a gasp.

It was lower than that, the sound of people recognizing something ugly in a man they had been shaking hands with.

At the lectern, the lawyer was hissing "Stop talking" at Tim's back.

Tim either did not hear him or no longer cared.

"She isn't well," he said. "I'd ask you to be kind."

Sienna took a step away from him, and then another.

I held the microphone against my ribs, and I did not use it.

I wanted to see what she would do.

I had waited three weeks for this, and I could wait one more minute.

She looked at the screen, at the gray page that had no space on it for her name.

Then she turned to the room.

"I'm not confused," she said.

Her voice shook, but it was steady enough.

"I married him in Las Vegas in the spring. I have a certificate. He swore on the license that he'd never been married before."

"That's a crime," a man said from a front table, not unkindly.
