Chapter 20: The Vote

Colter's POV

The hotel gave us a suite on the fourteenth floor with a long table and a view of a river none of us looked at.

Seven directors sat down.

Tim's lawyer stood in the doorway until the board chair told him to wait in the hall, and then she told the hall guard to keep him there.

She did not sit.

"We will take one vote," she said. "Whether Mr. Corbin continues as chief executive officer. Discussion is open for ten minutes."

It took four.

The two directors who still thought Tim had hung the moon were a retired banker and a man who had made his fortune in logistics.

The banker spoke first.

"The registration statement states he has one spouse," he said. "It names the wrong woman."

"Yes."

"Then every signature on it is a problem, and so is every signature I made relying on it."

He looked gray.

"I'm sorry," he said to the chair. "I should have asked you sooner why you weren't smiling at his speeches."

The logistics man said only, "I want to be on the record that I was lied to."

The vote was seven to nothing.

The chair named herself interim chief executive, and a second director interim chair, and she said the company would file the correction before the market opened.

She said it in the flat voice of a woman who had run a hospital system.

Then she turned to me.

"Mr. Hartigan, you'll want to stay out of the room when we discuss compensation to Ms. Brecker."

"Yes."

"You have a conflict."
