Chapter 8: Six Years
Colter's POV
The printout lived in the second drawer of my desk, under a stapler I never used.
On Sunday night I carried it home and flattened it on the kitchen table in Brooklyn Heights.
I read the first line again.
# v0. If this works, Tim will say he thought of it.
I pulled out a chair, then pushed it back in, because I knew I would not sit.
Six years ago I had read that page in a glass conference room, with a box of cold dumplings, while my junior partner begged me to skip the code review.
I never skipped it.
I read eleven hundred commits in one night.
By sunrise I knew the software was better than the pitch deck.
I knew the woman who wrote it thought three steps ahead of every founder I had ever funded.
And I knew the CEO had never opened the codebase.
I put the printout down and picked it up again.
I had printed the first page because it made me laugh.
I had kept it because the joke was already true.
The next morning I wrote "Corbin and Brecker, cofounders" into the term sheet myself.
Tim's lawyer sent it back with one name on it.
He said Ms. Brecker had declined the title.
I asked to meet her.
He said she was in the middle of a launch and hated investor meetings.
I should have pushed a second time.
I had pushed once, and he had an answer ready, and I took it.
