Chapter 12: Under Her Hand
"No," Cal said.
"Yes."
"You are not walking into Caspar Crowninshield's house."
"I am walking in on your arm in a dress, and I'm saying the words, and then we're going home."
"You don't know what he is."
"Then tell me tomorrow."
"Penelope."
"Cal." I stepped up to him and put my palm on his chest, where his heart was still going from the wall. "I'm not asking."
He looked down at me for a long time.
His jaw worked.
Then, very slowly, the fight went out of his shoulders.
"You're going to be the death of me," he said.
"Probably."
"I'll tell you everything. Tonight."
"Later."
"When?"
"After I'm finished with you."
His eyes flicked up.
I took his wrist, the thick right one with the gold watch, and pulled him down the hall to the grey bedroom.
I didn't let go.
At the foot of the bed I put my hand on his chest and pushed him.
He sat.
"Lie back," I said. "All the way. Head on the pillows."
He lay back.
I climbed onto the bed beside his hip and looked at him.
He lay long and hard and perfect in a T-shirt and sweatpants, his hair messed and his mouth red where I'd bitten it.
"Take your shirt off."
He pulled it over his head.
"Hands on the headboard."
"Penelope."
"Put them there. Hold on to the rails. Don't let go until I say."
He raised his arms above his head and wrapped his fingers around the iron bars of the headboard.
His biceps flexed, and the long scar along his ribs pulled tight.
His knuckles went white.
I kneeled over him, with my knees on either side of his thighs, and put my hands on his stomach.
