Chapter 8: Back Seat
On Thursday night I told him yes.
I did it in the back of his car on the way to dinner, in a green dress I had borrowed from Dani.
My hand was in his on the leather seat between us.
Abel was driving.
The partition behind him was down, and the city went by gold and wet outside the windows.
"Ask me," I said.
Cal turned his head.
"Ask you what?"
"The thing. With the ring."
He went completely still.
"Penelope."
"I know what he said on my stairs. I know there's something on the calendar."
"I know you'll tell me, and I know it will be true."
"Yes."
"I've thought about it for two days."
"And?"
"I wasn't scared of the man with the ring."
"I was scared of how much I wanted to be standing next to you when he came back."
His hand closed on mine.
He took the black box out of his coat, opened it with his thumb, and the light from the streetlamps slid across the stone.
It was a plain diamond on a thin gold band.
It was exactly the ring I would have picked for myself, if I had ever picked a ring.
"I don't have a speech," he said. "I had one. It's gone."
"Then just ask."
