Chapter 22: The Floor

At nine the boardroom was full.

Nine directors sat at the long table, with the old woman who chaired the audit committee at the foot.

Dashiell sat at the head with his hands folded.

Vane sat halfway down, in a fresh grey suit, and behind his chair there was a second row of seats for guests.

Winifred Lowell sat in the first of them with her handbag on her knee.

She smiled at me when I came in.

I stood against the wall with my laptop, where I always stood, and I smiled back.

"Mr. Vane has the floor," said the audit chair.

Vane stood.

"Colleagues, this is not easy," he said.

I smelled nothing in that room, as always.

"Last night, in front of two hundred members of the Howling Bay pack, it was shown that our chairman hid a pact, a pregnancy and a liaison with a junior employee."

He spread his hands.

"He hid them from you, and from the Alphas who sit on this coast. I move that Dashiell Crane be removed as chairman, today, for cause."

Nobody at the table looked at Dashiell.

He did not look at them.

He was looking at me.

He had said nothing about what I should do, and I knew it was because he was going to let me choose.

I closed my laptop.

"Madam Chair," I said. "May I speak?"

Vane turned. "Miss Tarrant is staff."

"Any employee may address the board on the company's conduct," said the audit chair.

She had a dry, careful voice.

"I wrote that rule myself. Go ahead."

I walked to the end of the table.

My knees were not shaking.

"Mr. Vane says the chairman is entangled in a pact," I said. "There's no pact."

I looked at the guest chairs.

"There's one woman's signature on a page with no seals. The elders of Howling Bay said so last night, and they're on their way to say it again."
