Chapter 19: In Writing
My daughter came home to Rockport on a Tuesday, at five pounds and one ounce, in a car seat Maeve had checked three times.
Leander came on the Thursday.
He came at two o'clock exactly by Maeve's watch, and he knocked, and he waited on the porch with a leather folder under his arm.
Maeve answered the door and looked him up and down.
"You're early for something, and I'm sure it's a legal thing," she said.
"I'm on time," Leander said. "May I come in?"
"Two chairs. Don't touch anything."
He sat at the kitchen table with the folder in front of him.
I sat across from him with the baby asleep in the sling against my chest, and Maeve leaned on the counter with her arms folded.
He had lost weight.
His good watch was gone, and in its place was a cheap plastic one with a black band.
"I'm not here to ask you home," he said. "I'd like to say that first."
"Say the rest."
He opened the folder.
"This is the trust my grandfather left me. It was a little over eleven million. I've moved it into a fund in her name. A bank holds it. I'm not a trustee, and neither is my mother, and neither of us can touch it before she's twenty-five."
"Leander."
"Her school, her doctors, anything. You can draw on it as her mother for her. I'll never see a statement."
Maeve's arms came down.
"That's the whole thing?" she said.
"It's most of it. I kept the salary I earn." He swallowed. "I've been moved to a regional manager's desk at the hotel group. It pays enough to live on. I've sold the Portland house, and I'm renting a one bedroom over a bakery."
"You sold the house?"
"I couldn't stand being in it."
