Chapter 8: Friday

"The clip is nothing," Lorna said. "A video fades in a week. Eleanor's lawyers do not."

She stood between me and the bathroom door with her hands folded.

The corridor was dark, and my drip stand stood beside me.

"What do you want, Lorna?"

"To help you." She took a step closer. "Take the video down, sign what Leander's family needs signed, and go home with him. I'll make sure you keep the baby in your own house."

"Keep her."

"Eleanor wants her in the Prescott house, Gwendolyn. She will win. She always does. I'm the only person who can talk her round."

I looked at her kind blue eyes and her perfect part.

I remembered her on my sofa, with my new phone in her hands, laughing at my password.

"You were in my seat before my plane reached the gate," I said.

"He asked me to keep him company. It was raining."

"He asked you. You climbed in the front seat, and then you texted me from the car to take my time."

She did not blink.

"I was being nice."

"Go home, Lorna."

"I'm trying to save you."

"Go home."

I walked around her, hauling the stand, and pushed the bathroom door open.

When I came out, the charge nurse stood in the corridor with a security guard.

Lorna was gone.

"She had a visitor sticker from the front desk," the charge nurse said. "Someone gave it to her. I'll find out who."

She walked me back to bed, and I lay awake until six.

On the third morning, the doctor signed my discharge.

"Bed rest at home," she said. "Feet up, weekly checks, and you call the second anything leaks. I'd like her to stay put until at least thirty-six weeks."
