Chapter 12: The Clip
Margot was dressed in four minutes.
She pulled on jeans and a coat over her sweater, and she shoved her feet into boots without socks.
I stood in the bedroom doorway, still holding my phone.
"Where are you going?"
"Where do you think?"
"It's one in the morning."
"The Nineteenth Precinct is open all night."
She picked up her keys from the dresser and walked past me.
I caught her arm.
She looked down at my hand, then up at my face.
"Let go, Mason."
"You can't."
"I killed a man."
"You pushed a man who was holding you."
"He's dead, and I was the one who pushed."
"Margot. Listen to me."
She stopped, because I had said it in a voice she didn't know.
"If you walk in there tonight with no proof, they will arrest you. Your grandfather has a lawyer who will say you were stealing, and you pushed Dale to cover it. Your signature is on eleven million dollars."
"I don't care."
"I do."
I said it before I could think.
It came out of me.
Her eyes went wide.
"Why?" she asked.
I couldn't tell her why.
I couldn't tell her about the keycard photograph, or the rooftop, or the dinner, or the careful cold plan that had started this whole thing.
If I opened my mouth and the truth came out, the best night of my year would end on the staircase.
"Because I was there," I said. "Because I saw him on the floor too. Because I lied for you at the precinct without being asked."
"You didn't lie. I did."
"I let you."
She pulled her arm out of my grip, gently.
She walked to the front door and opened it.
I followed her down the stairs and out onto the sidewalk.
