I stood in the gravel and looked at the box with two blank lines in it.
My partner held out a marker.
"Not yet," I said.
"Why not?"
"Because he hasn't asked me the right way yet."
She grinned so wide I could see her back teeth.
"Oh, he's asking," she said. "Up there. In front of everybody. We heard."
"Who told you?"
"The night guard at the old tower drinks at our bar."
Of course he did.
The topping-out was on a Saturday in early November, two weeks later.
The sky over the North Shore was cold and clear, and the river was the color of a new wrench.
Fifty-one floors of steel stood up out of the ground, every bolt in them checked twice.
The press came. The city came. The mayor came, in a hard hat that didn't fit.
Hayden's mother came, alone, in a long camel coat, and stood next to my father.
Kaylee came with the baby strapped to her chest in a carrier, two months old and furious about the cold.
She stood at the back of the crowd.
Then my father saw her, and waved her up to the front, and made room.
