Chapter 15: Not on the List

Harrison's POV

Lena came back to the penthouse on Tuesday evening with her bag, and she put it in the guest room.

We both looked at the open door for a moment, and neither of us said anything about it.

I made eggs, because it was what I knew how to make.

She ate them standing at the island, in a sweatshirt that belonged to her sister.

"I want to ask you something," she said. "You can say no."

"Ask."

"Three years ago, at your father's funeral, I said something to you in front of your family. Dylan told me later you went white. I never knew why."

I put down the pan.

I had not expected her to remember it. I had been sure it was mine alone.

"You said I could have come more," I said.

"I did."

"I was in the driveway of the lake house the week before he died. The housekeeper came out and told me Cynthia had written his nurse a list. Walter was too tired for visitors. I was not on the list."

Lena stopped chewing.

"For six days I drove there, and six times she sent me home," I said. "He died on the seventh, while I was in a board meeting that Cynthia had moved to that morning."

"Harrison."

"At the funeral you were twenty-five, and Dylan had told you I never visited. You said it to my face, over the sandwiches, with Cynthia at your elbow. And I let you. I couldn't say it without sounding like I was blaming a widow at her husband's funeral."

She put her fork down.

She walked around the island and stood close, and I did not move, because the terms said I should not.
