Chapter 7: Convincing

Harrison reached into his jacket and took out a folded sheet of paper.

He did not hurry. He walked to the foot of the stage, handed it to the man with the gray beard, and stood next to me.

The man unfolded it and read it from top to bottom.

"State of Washington," he said. "Marriage certificate. Harrison Trelawny and Lena Hassett. Signed Tuesday, nine fourteen in the morning, by a superior court judge."

He looked up over his glasses at Cynthia.

"It's in order, Cynthia."

"Well," Cynthia said. "How wonderful."

She smiled until her cheeks were tight, and her hand slid off her son's arm.

"Dylan," the man said. "You'll settle with Mrs. Trelawny by Friday, in full, or you'll come to my office on Monday and explain why."

"Yes, sir," Dylan said.

His trophy was still in his hand, and he did not seem to know where to put it.

Harrison took my elbow.

"We're leaving," he said, to the room.

Four hundred people parted for us, and no one clapped, and I was grateful.

Megan was waiting in the parking lot with a thermos and a rolling pin, as promised.

"I heard," she said, before I had said a word. "A woman in the elevator was crying. In a good way."

"Go home, Megan."

"I'm going. I'm going." She gave Harrison a long look and said, "Feed her."

Then she drove away.

Harrison opened the car door for me, and I did not get in.

I turned around and put both hands flat on his chest.

"Lena," he said.

"You said you were going to decide where," I said. "Tonight. You said you'd spend the dinner deciding."

"I did."

"Where did you decide?"

His throat moved when he swallowed.

"The terms say no touching unless you start it," he said.
