Chapter 5: The Stairwell

The lawyer's office was above a nail salon, and it smelled of acetone and old coffee.

Elsie sat across from her desk with Nora in the carrier and Wyatt asleep in the stroller she had rolled up two flights of outside stairs.

The lawyer was a tired woman in her fifties with reading glasses pushed up into gray hair.

She read the promissory note on Elsie's phone twice, and then she read the custody petition.

"The note is good," she said. "It's clear, it's signed and it's witnessed. You have a real claim."

"Then I'll win."

"You'll win a judgment against Rafferty Row, which is a company with no assets that I can find."

Elsie said nothing.

"A judgment is paper, Ms. Farragut. Getting the money out of him means finding who is paying his bills."

"How much will that cost?"

"The retainer is two thousand dollars."

Elsie took out her debit card.

It was the last of her savings, and it was the money she had set aside for formula and diapers.

She slid it across the desk before she could think about it.

"The custody petition worries me more than the money," the lawyer said. "The judge will ask who supports you. A mother with twins and no family around her looks fragile, whatever the facts are."

"I have a friend."

"Then bring her to the hearing. Bring anyone. Neighbors, a boss, a pastor. Someone who has watched you do this."

It was three weeks away.

Elsie nodded, and wrote it down, and walked out with a receipt and an empty account.

She was on her own landing when she heard the voices.

Someone was knocking on her door, hard and steadily, and a woman's voice was calling her name.
