Chapter 15: Gail
On Monday morning my mother stood at the bait counter and cut a pound of herring into chunks without saying a word.
I was filling the minnow tanks and pretending I wasn't looking at the road.
Ansel's truck hadn't come down it.
Not Sunday night, and not that morning.
"You're pouring on the floor," Gail said.
I looked down.
Water had run across my shoes.
I shut off the hose.
She wiped her knife on a rag and set it on the board.
"I left Michigan State in October," she said.
I turned around.
"My first fall. I was eighteen."
"I know. You told me you left."
"I told you I left. I never told you how."
She picked up a piece of herring and looked at it.
"There was a man with a charter business in Port Clement. He was thirty. He had a boat and a tan, and he thought I was funny."
"Dad."
"Your father. Yes." She cut the herring in half. "He told me I didn't have to choose. He said I could stay in school and he'd drive down on weekends."
