Chapter 17: The Spare Week

Gail left at six on Thursday morning with a duffel bag and a casserole dish.

"Clean," she said, from the truck window.

"I know."

"I mean it."

"I know, Mom."

"The sheets in the hall closet are the blue ones." She started the engine. "Don't use the green ones. I'm fond of the green ones."

She drove off up the marina road, and I stood in the lot with my face on fire.

I spent the whole day at the bait counter making a schedule.

I'm that kind of person.

By eight o'clock I had it on a bait-shop receipt in four colors.

Dinner at nine.

Then the movie we'd both seen a dozen times.

Then, at ten-fifteen, the part I hadn't labeled, which was just a small arrow pointing at my bedroom door.

Ansel came up the outside stairs at nine on the dot.

He had wet hair, clean jeans and a toothbrush sticking out of his back pocket.

"You brought a toothbrush," I said.

"I'm told it's polite."

"Who told you?"

"Bea."

"Of course she did."

He stepped inside and looked around at my kitchen, though he'd eaten cereal at its table since he was eight.

I had the receipt in my hand.

He took it.

He read it, front and back, in my four colors.

"Dinner at nine," he said. "Movie. Arrow."

"The arrow is flexible."

"I love the arrow."

He folded the receipt into a very small square and put it in his pocket.

"What are you doing?"
