Chapter 22: Time Zones
The first cold week in Ann Arbor started with a bad idea and a video call.
It was ten at night on the first Tuesday in November, which made it seven in Seattle.
My roommate was at her study group until midnight.
I locked the door, pulled the blanket off my loft bed, and propped my phone against the lamp.
Ansel's face filled the screen.
He had his hair in the rubber band and a gray Washington hoodie with the sleeves pushed up.
He looked tired.
He was also grinning.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi."
"You're not wearing a shirt."
"Neither are you, soon."
"I'm wearing a hoodie."
"Take it off."
He took it off.
I forgot about the paper I had due on Friday.
I forgot about everything but his chest, and the shadows his collarbones made in the screen light, and the voice that had gotten lower and slower over the phone than it ever was in person.
"Show me," he said.
"Show you what?"
"Everything. I've been thinking about it since the coxswain started yelling at me this morning."
