Chapter 21: The Signature
Nobody in the barn moved.
A baby cried somewhere near the back, and a mother hushed it.
Dalton looked around the tables with his hand still raised.
"I'll say it plain," he said. "My brother took up with a waitress from Spokane."
"She turned up pregnant, with a story about money and a man who left her."
"And in a month, my brother's a daddy, and by an old clause in our father's will, a rich one."
A murmur ran through the barn.
"Ask him," Dalton said. "Ask him what the will says. Ask him how long he's known."
I felt my face go hot.
Under the table, Boone's boot pressed mine harder.
I stood up.
It took me longer than it used to, with a belly, and my chair scraped the boards.
"I'll answer that," I said. "I was asked to a table tonight, and I'm not going to sit and be talked about at it."
"I came to this county to wait tables."
