Chapter 22: No Such Clause
"Sit down, Dalton," Maxine said. "I'm not finished."
She had not raised her voice.
It stopped his laugh.
I stood in the aisle with my hand in Boone's and the whole barn at my back.
Maxine picked up the long brown envelope from beside her plate and weighed it in her palm.
"My elder son has just given away his half of this ranch," she said. "On the strength of a clause in his father's will."
"There is no such clause."
The barn made a sound I had never heard a crowd make, a breath drawn in by two hundred people at once.
"Mother?" Boone said.
"There is no such clause," Maxine said again, clearly, so the back rows could hear. "I wrote it."
"The night after the funeral I sat at this table with a typewriter and a bottle of my husband's whiskey."
"His will says the ranch goes to both of you, in equal shares, with no conditions, and no strings, and no grandchild."
