Chapter 10: What He Chose

Outside, the sky had turned a flat bright white.

I walked out of the clinic doors ahead of him and stopped at the curb, because there was nowhere else to go.

A bus hissed by.

A man in scrubs sat on a bench eating a granola bar.

I stood on the concrete in my mother's quilt and my coat and breathed.

Behind me the glass door opened and closed.

"Suzette."

"Not yet."

"I need to say..."

"I said not yet."

He stopped.

I took a long, steadying breath.

When I was ready, I turned.

He stood three feet away with his hands open at his sides.

His tie was loose.

I had never seen him look unfinished before.

"I'm going to tell you something," I said. "And I want you to listen to the end."

"Yes."

"I have given blood fifty-two times in two years."

His face did not move.

"Seventeen of those were after the eleventh of February. I kept track of them in the suite, on the wall calendar behind the nurse."

"Suzette..."

"February twenty-sixth. March twelfth. March twenty-sixth." I did not take my eyes off him. "I know every date. I know which arm. I know which Wednesday I fainted, and which one I cried in the bathroom afterward and washed my face so you wouldn't see."

"I didn't see."
