Chapter 5: Signing

The law office had a long glass table and a view of the river.

I arrived first, with Lester beside me in his one good suit.

He had insisted on coming.

"Somebody has to be on your side of the table," he said.

The lawyer was a thin man with a clipped voice.

He slid a stack of papers toward the empty seats and did not ask me one question.

At two minutes after two, Roberta swept in with Sabrina on her arm.

Sabrina wore sunglasses and a cashmere wrap and moved as if every step cost her.

Finley came last, in a charcoal suit, and sat on the far side of the table without looking at me.

"This is theater," Roberta said, taking her chair. "I want that on the record."

"It's noted," the lawyer said.

"Suzette, you were always a girl who liked an audience."

"I'm not the one who brought a daughter in a wrap."

Sabrina lifted her sunglasses and glared at me.

Her eyes were rimmed in red, and for a second I felt sorry for her.

Then she said, "Don't be jealous, Suzette. It's not attractive on someone who looks like that."

"Sabrina," Finley said.

"I'm only being honest."

The lawyer cleared his throat.

"The matter before us is the transfer of the property at 214 Fisk Street from Mr. Hollister to Mrs. Hollister, under terms agreed yesterday."

"Excuse me," Roberta said.

"Yes?"

"I'd like to say that this transaction was fair, and that I'm hurt to be dragged here as if I'd stolen something."

The window behind her showed a bridge and a long gray barge.

"Roberta," I said.

"Yes, dear?"

"You had me sign the house over at my father's funeral."
