Chapter 22: The Pull
It felt like standing between two furnaces, one of them made of ice.
Every breath tore a little.
The gold light climbed my arms, and the ice kept cracking under my boots.
Both boys were reaching for me, their hands stopped an inch from my sleeves.
They were still keeping the rule.
Even now.
"Don't," I said. "Not yet. Both of you stay where you are."
"Pengelly," Rhys said, shaking. "You're on fire."
"I know."
"The bonds feed on the first answer," said the old woman in black. "Ask each what you will. Quickly, child."
I put my good hand against my chest, where the burning crossed, and tried to think.
When I'd been small and frightened, my mother had told me to look at one thing at a time.
I looked at Lucian.
He stood white-faced in the red light, his hands empty.
"Lucian," I said. "I'm going to ask you something, and I want it plain."
"Ask."
"If I chose you, what would I be to your court?"
