Chapter 23: The Choice
I came back to the lake at dawn with my father beside me.
He had asked to walk in with me, and I had said yes.
The sky over the ice was the color of the inside of a shell, and the stones stood out black against it.
Every wolf and every vampire was still there.
Some of them had slept on the snow.
None of them spoke as we crossed the ring.
My father let go of my arm at the brazier, and he stepped in front of me.
The Regent saw him and went absolutely still.
"You," said the Regent.
"Me," my father said. "I'm the one who broke your law."
"I married a wolf, and I fathered her child, and I did it on purpose."
"You are a deserter."
"I'm a husband," said my father. "If someone has to answer for it, answer to me, not to my daughter."
The Alpha's jaw moved.
